Standing Stones

This is my adaptation of a traditional song, with traditional lyrics (in case anyone is worried about copyright infringement). A more traditional version of the song can be found on the album 'Parallel Dreams' by Loreena McKennitt

In one of these lonely British Isles
There dwelled a Puppy fair.
His cheeks were red, his eyes were brown,
He had yellow spiky hair.
Which caught the eye and then the heart
Of one who could never be
An owner of so true a Pooch
Or fair a Pup as he.

Across the land in another town
Dwelled a Boss he held most true,
And ever since his Puppydom
He had watched those eyes so blue.
The land runs out into the sea,
Its a narrow neck of land,
Where weird and grim the Standing Stones
In a circle where they stand.

One bonny moonlit Yultide Eve
They met at that sad place.
With Pup’s heart in glee and the beams of love
Were shining on his face.
When his Boss, he came and he stroked his Pup,
And what loving words he said.
He talked of futures happy days,
As through the stones they strayed.

Boss walked toward the hollow stone
And through it passed his hands.
He plighted there a Constant Oath
Sealed by collar, tag, and bands.
He kissed his pup, and then he watched him
That lonely bridge go oer.
For little, little did he think
He wouldn’t see his puppy more.

Boss turned his face toward his home
That home he did never see.
And you shall have the story
As it was told to me.
When a form upon him sprang
With a dagger gleaming bright.
It pierced his heart, his dying screams
Disturbed the silent night.

The Pup had nearly reached his home
When he was startled by a cry.
He turned to look around him,
And his Boss was standing by,
His hand was pointing to the stars
And his eyes glazed at the light,
And with a smiling countenance
He vanished from Pup’s sight.

Pup quickly turned and home he ran,
Not a word of this was said,
For well Pup knew at seeing his form
That his faithful Boss was dead.
And from that day Pup pined away,
Not a smile seen on his face.
And with outstretched paws
He went to meet him
In a brighter place.

Standing Stones of the British Isles
Gazing out to sea
Standing Stones of the British Isles
Bring my Pup to me.
